Amrit Gangar Biography
Amrit Gangar is a popular film scholar, film theorist and writer from Mumbai, Maharashtra. He is also known as a curator, critic and historian. He was associated with ‘The National Museum of Indian Cinema’, the first museum of this kind set up in India. Earlier he was associated with the Mulund, Mumbai based film society. Over the years he has also conducted many workshops related to cinema and literature. He serves as the Program Consultant of Cultural Centre of Russia and Goethe Institute, Max Mueller Bhavan, both in Mumbai. He has collaborated with Danish film directors such as Lars Von Trier and Jorgen Leth to better understand Indian cinema. He had been the curator of film programmes for the Kalaghoda Artfest in its initial period.
He has edited, authored and co-authored several publications in English and Gujarathi. He has also lectured at several colleges and institutions in India and abroad. He invented new concept of cinema and named it as ‘Cinema of Prayoga’, which is an attempt of Indian movies to invent a new visual world. He coined the term Prayoga, deriving from Sanskrit words and refers to a continuing research processes in time and space. He shared his new concept for the first time at Experimenta 2005 in Mumbai and later presented it at various venues, both India and abroad.
Throughout his career he has served as a jury member at different Film Festivals and Committees. Most recently in 2014, he was a jury member of Cinema Verite held at Tehran, Iran. He has also produced many documentaries on Indian cinema.
