Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Biography
Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna was a former chief minister of UP. Earlier he was a congress party leader, but later joined Bharatiya Lok Dal. Post independence period he played a major role in Trade Unions also. He became the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh in the year 1973 and was forced to resign the position after 2 years. He has been honored with “Proud Past Alumni" of Allahabad University. He married twice in his life.
Bahuguna was born on 25 April 1919 in a small village called Bughani in the district of Pauri Garhwal in Uttarakhand, as the son of Ravati Nandan Bahuguna, a village patwari. He studied in D.A.V. School and Messmore Inter College of Pauri Town. His higher studies was completed at Allahabad, Government Intermediate College. He founded the first "Students Parliament" in the college and was elected its "Prime Minister". Later he joined Allahabad University for graduation and it was the time when Gandhi announced Non-Cooperation Movement. He too joined it under youth wing. The British declared him a rebel and declared prize money of Rs. 5000 to find him dead or alive. Bahuguna went underground.
Bahuguna was jailed several times in the prisons of Allahabad and Sultanpur. During Quit India Movement, he was jailed for 4 years. Same year he completed graduation in arts (1946). After Indian Independence, he played lead role in organizing trade unions. In 1953 he became a member of the Indian National Trade Union Congress.
In 1952, he entered active politics. He was elected M.L.A. from Karchana and Chail constituency in Allahabad and has influenced his fellow people through his deep knowledge in legislative process. In 1957, he was appointed as Parliamentary Secretary and gave the portfolio of labour and industry. In 1967 he was made the Finance Minister with the U.P Government. In 1971, he was made State Minister for Communication in the Union Cabinet. Two years later, he became the chief minister of the state. In 1977, when Indira Gandhi announced new elections to the Lok Sabha, Bahuguna left the Congress and formed a new group called Congress for Democracy. Later he has served in different positions in the cabinet.
