K. M. Binu Biography

K. M. Binu is an Indian athlete and sportsman from Idukki, Kerala. He specialises in the 400 metres event. He came to limelight after he got qualified for Olympics, thus becoming only the second Indian to qualify for the 400 metres event after Milkha Singh in 1956 and 1960. He was qualified for 2004 Olympics. He specializes in 400 metres and 800 metres. He broke 400 metres national record of 45.48 s set in 2004, the record he set up at Athens Olympics on 20 August 2004. The record was later broken. He broke the 44-year-old Olympics mark held by any Indian, originally laid by Milkha Singh with a timing of 45.73 s at the 1960 Rome Olympics. It was a National award for long 44 years till it was broken. He is the younger brother of famous athlete, K. M. Beenamol.

 

K. M. Binu was born in Idukki in the year 1980. Like many athletes from Kerala who shined in many national and international athletic events, Binu too owns an illustrious career in the field. Following the footsteps of his elder sister Beenamol, he too joined tracks, and made a name of his own in this field. The siblings were coached by Ury from Ukraine.

 

The siblings are credited to becoming the first Indian athlete siblings to register international wins in a single tournament. They won medals in many major international competitions, most notably Busan Asian Games (2002). Binu won the men's 800 metres silver and his sister won the gold medal in the women's event, thus making it a record. In 2006, Binu was given Arjuna award, for his outstanding contributions towards the field of Indian athletics.
