Sekhar Kammula Biography

Sekhar Kammula is a Telugu film director, screenwriter, choreographer and producer. His first film, Dollar Dreams won him the National Film Award for best debutant director. He has won six Nandi Awards till now. In 2011, he represented Indian Cinema at the Cannes Film Festival. He won Nandi Award for Best Director for the movie, Anand in 2004 and Godavari in 2006. In 2011, he won Nandi Award for Best Story for the movie – Leader. He has won Nandi Award for Second Best Feature Film three times – Anand in 2004, Godavari in 2006 and Happy days in 2007. Happy Days won him Filmfare awards for best film and best director for the year 2007. Same movie earned Dasari Best Film Director Award the same year.

Born in Hyderabad in 1972, he did his schooling at St. Patrick's High School, Secunderabad. He completed his intermediate studies from St. Alphonsa's and took Mechanical Engineering degree from Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology. Later he took a degree in Computer Sciences at New Jersey, US and worked in IT field for a while. Then he enrolled in the MFA program at Howard University, Washington, D.C.

As a film director his first movie was Dollar Dreams which earned him the National Film Award for best debutant director. His second film, Anand, was a blockbuster in 2004. His third movie, Godavari received critical appreciation and was moderate success at box office. In 2007, Happy days was released. This movie was a blockbuster success and received numerous awards at Nandi and Filmfare awards. In 2008, he produced the movie, Avakai Biryani. After that two movies are released till now – Leader in 2010 and Life is beautiful. Both these movies received good response from public. He has done choreography for his movies – Leader and Happy days.
