Shefali Chhaya Biography

Shefali Chhaya is a Bollywood actress most popular for Ram Gopal Varma movie Satya (1998) for which she won Filmfare Critics Award Best Actress. She debut Bollywood through Ram Gopal Varma’s Rangeela. Yet it was through the movie, Satya that she got critical acclamation for the first time. She also won Star Screen Award for Best Supporting Actress in the year 1998 for the same role as Pyaari Mhatre in the movie. In 2007, she won National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for the movie - The Last Lear. Same year she won best actress award at Tokyo International Film Festival for the movie, Gandhi: My father. She has worked in both commercial movies as well as parallel cinema. She is the wife of famous Bollywood director Vipul Shah. Now she has changed her name to Shefali Shah. She has acted in his movie, Waqt: Race against time.  Earlier she had divorced Harsh Chhaya.

 

Her other Bollywood movies include – Waqt: The race against time (2005) where she played the role of Amitabh Bachchan’s wife, 15 Park Avenue, Mohabbatein, Monsoon Wedding, Kuch luv jaisa, Black and white and Karthik Calling Karthik. She has worked for only a few movies till now. Yet she is remembered for her brilliant performance in these movies and always categorized under best performers of Hindi cinema. She has also acted in a stage play, Bas Itna Sa Khwab opposite Kiran Karmarkar in the Hindi version of Chandrakant Kulkarni’s play Dhyanimani.

 

Shefali Chhaya was born as the daughter of Sudhakar Shetty and Shobha Shetty in July 1972. Her father was an RBI employee and mother, a homeopathy doctor. She spent her early childhood at the RBI quarters in Santa Cruz, Mumbai where she attended Arya Vidya Mandir.

 

Shah made her film debut with Rangeela (1995) in a brief role. During 90’s she entered television serials as well. Aarohan, Sea hawks, Hasratein, Banegi Apni Baat, Kabhi kabhi and Raahein need special mention. She played leading role in Raahein.
