Vijayakanth Biography

Vijayakanth is a well known actor and politician in Tamil Nadu. He founded Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam. He won the 2011 Tamil Nadu legislative assembly election representing Virudhachalam. He was born on 25th August 1952 in Madurai. K. N. Alagarswami and Aandal Azhagarswami are his parents. His original name was Vijayaraj Azhagarswami Naidu. Director Khaja who directed his first film Inikum Ilamai gave changed his name to Vijaykanth. Later after his 100th film Captain Prabhakaran, he is called as Captain Vijaykanth. His was married to Premalatha on 31st January 1990. Vijay Prabhakar and Shanmuga Pandian are his two sons.

 

Vijayakanth started his schooling in Rosary Convent, Madurai. Then he entered M C School where he studied up to 6th standard. Then he was a student of T. Britto High School, Devakottai and joined the hostel there. He pursued his higher education in St. Mary’s School. He could complete only up to 11th standard. Later he was called to look after his father’s rice mill. He met his confident friend Ibrahim Rowther during his school life who remains his beloved friend till date.

 

After his first film, Inikkum Ilamai, he acted in many other films like Dhooraththu Idi Muzhakkam, Agal Vilakku and Neerottam. Some of the hit films are Vanathai Pola, Captain Prabakaran, Ulavu Thurai, Chinna Gounder, kaavalkaran, Ramana, Sethupathi IPS, etc. In most of the films that he acted he played the role of cop. He got the honor of acting as a hero of the first 3D Tamil Movie Annai Bhoomi. Though he has acted in 153 movies totally, he did not act in films of any other languages than Tamil.

 

He announced the formation of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam on 14th September 2005 at Madurai. In 2006 assembly election he could win only one seat contested by him. However in 2011 election he formed an alliance with AIADMK and could win 29 out of 41 seats contested by his party. He became the member of Tamil Nadu legislative assembly for the second time representing Rishivandhiyam.

 

His bright career in film industry has gained him many awards such as Filmfare Awar for Best Tamil Actor for the movie Amman Kovil Kizhakale, Tamil Nadu State film award in 1996 and Kalaimamani Award in 2001. He also got Honorary doctorate degree.
