Vikraman Biography

Vikraman is a Tamil film director who came to limelight with his debut movie itself. His first movie as a director was Pudhu Vasantham, telling the story of four unemployed friends who are musical experts. The movie gave new definitions to boy-girl friendship and was a huge success. He is the director of blockbuster movie, Sooryavansham which made record breaking collection state wide and later remade to other languages including Hindi, with Big B playing the title role. Sarath Kumar and Devayani played the lead roles in original version. Poove Unakkaga in 1996, Vanathai Pola in 2000 and Unnidathil Ennai Koduthen in 1998 are his most successful movies. He has been one of the most successful Tamil directors during the decade of 1990’s. Many of his movies have been remade to other south Indian languages as well as Hindi.  

He debut as a director in the year 1989 with the movie, Puthu vasantham. This particular movie broke the angry young man image of actor Murali and after this movie, he was seen in a new avatar as a light hearted hero in most of his movies. This movie proved to be the turning point of his sinking career as well. This movie was followed by the flop, Pudhiya Mannargal which prompted Vikraman to wear assistant director’s cap again.

In 1996, he returned in a bang giving big break to actor Vijay. The movie was Poove Unakkaga in 1996 and it was a commercial success. The following year, Sooryavarsam was released and its record breaking success placed Vikraman as an established director of late 1990’s. Unnidathil Ennai Koduthen and Vanathai Pola were next two big hits. Vanathai Pola won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment in 2001 and also many state awards. But later on, his career drifted slowly. Mariyadhai (2009) was his last release.
