Indian Famous Shiva Temples

 

The devotees from various places in India worship Lord Shiva in different forms like Mukkanti, Bhola Sankar, SriManjunatha, Mallanna, Mallikarjuna and many more. Numbers of Shiva temples are established in India from North to South. In every city or town or village Shiva remains.

The devotees of Lord Shiva believe that he will surely help them when they are in difficulties. There are many famous Shiva temples in India. So let us discuss about those famous Shiva temples.

1. Kashi Vishwanath  temple in Varanasi

Varanasi is in utter Pradesh state. The Lord Shiva in this city and temple is worshipped as Kashi Vishwanath. Hindus believe that people who ever take a bath in the Ganga River which is flowing over here, and then they will be getting relieved from the previous birth karmas. The Varana and Asi rivers will join in Ganga river in this city. So this place is known as the Varanasi (Varana+asi rivers). The Britishers used to call Varanasi as Benaras. Therefore, Kasi has become Varanasi and even Benaras.

2. Kedarnath Temple

This is one of the important pilgrimages of Hindus. It is located in the Rudraprayoga district in Uttaranchal. This temple is situated 3584 meters above the sea level. The temple is between the Mandakini River and snow. It is the favorite pilgrimage of most of the Hindus.

3. Somanath Temple

This temple is located at Veraval in Saurashtra in Gujarat state. This is also known as Prabhas teerth. According to sthala purana, it is believed that the Somanath temple was built by moon.

4. LingaRaja Temple

This temple is in Bhubaneswar which is the capital of Orissa. It’s a very big size temple. Lord Shiva is the king of Linga, so it is known as Lingaraju temple. Devotees worship Lord Shiva in this temple as Tribuvaneswara. This temple was built 1100 years ago. The height of this temple is 180 feet.

5. Mallikarjuna Temple:

This temple was located in Srisailam, at Kurnool district in Andhra Pradesh. The Krishna River which is flowing here was known as Pathala Ganga. Adi sankaracharya has written Sivananda Lahari here only. Bramarambadevi is the Goddess of this temple.

6. Rameshwara Temple

This temple is situated in Tamil Nadu. It is the place where Lord Sri Rama has worshipped Lord Shiva. Worshipping Lord Shiva with the Ganga River water and mixing sand from the Rameshwara is the tradition of this temple. The goddess is Parvatha Vardhini.
