Amar Singh I was the ruler of Mewer who ruled the state during the period 19 January 1597 - 26 January 1620. But he is better remembered as the son of great warrior - Maharana Pratap. Amar Singh was the eldest son of Pratap and his first wife - Maharani Ajabade Punwar. The kingdom of Mewar was set up by his paternal grandfather Udai Singh II. He was the 13th Rana of Mewar dynasty of Sisodia Rajputs. He fought many wars with Mughal emperor Jahangir during his lifetime.
He was born in Chittor on 16 March 1559, exactly the same year when his grandfather laid the foundation of Udaipur. When Udai Singh II lost his kingdom Chittoor to Akbar, he shifted with his royal family to Udaipur. His father is popular for his wars against Akbar and Mughals and re-conquered Chittor and other territories lost to Mughals. Amar Singh was trained in military warfare and weapons since childhood and he fought many battles with his father. After his father’s death, Amar Singh I ascended the throne on 19 January 1597. Amar Singh is also known for many battles he fought with Mughals and other rulers.
After the death of Akbar, Mewar was given back to Amar Singh by Jahangir under his mastership. But later too rivalry existed between the two and Jahangir sent his army. In the year 1606, a battle was fought in a valley of Aravalli, where Amar Singh killed the Mughal commander in charge, Sultan Khan. Thus he defended his territories against Mughal invasion. Later battles were fought in 1608 and later under the leadership of Prince Shah Jahan, which damaged assets and people. Finally Amar Singh entered into a peace treaty with Shah Jahan in 1615. Amar Singh died on 26 January 1620 at Udaipur and Karan Singh II succeeded him.
