Ashok Chavan Biography
Ashok Chavan is a prominent political leader from Maharashtra who served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 8 December 2008 to 9 November 2010. He is associated with Indian national Congress. He is the son of prominent Congress leader and former Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shankarrao Chavan who served as Chief Minister of Maharashtra twice, and has served as a cabinet minister of Rajiv Gandhi and Narasimha Rao’s cabinet in the 1980s and 1990s. His wife Ameeta Ashokrao Chavan is currently an MLA of Bhokar constituency, Maharashtra. Ashok Chavan has earlier served as Minister of Cultural Affairs, Industries, Mines and Protocol in the Vilasrao Deshmukh’s cabinet, and also Minister of Revenue during 1999-2004.
He was born in 1958 in Mumbai to one of the most influential political families of Maharashtra. He has been influenced by his father Shankarrao Chavan a lot and Ashok too joined political field, and earned name as a good leader. He holds a master’s degree in Business Management. He started his political journey in the 1980s as General Secretary, Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee. Since then he has slowly moved to many elite positions of state politics before he became the Chief Minister in 2008. He also served as General Secretary of Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee from 1995 to 1999.
Though he has been an influential leader, he is not free from controversies too. He is one among the accused of the infamous Adarsh Housing Society Scam, which rocked the nation. He was accused of using his office to fund his relatives' bank. Chavan failed to file his election expenses in the prescribed format during 2009 Lok Sabha elections and The Election Commission issued a notice asking why he should not be disqualified. He currently serves as MP representing Nanded constituency.
