Blessy Biography
No doubt, Blessy is the blessed director of Mollywood of new millennium. His films – you can count with your finger tips; yet they are distinct landmarks in the history of Malayalam cinema. He started his career as an assistant director in 1986 for Padmarajan’s movie – Namukku Paarkkaam Munthiri Thoppukal. He showed the early signs of his intelligence and artistic style from his debut movie Kaazhcha (2004) itself – that gave a lot of awards to him and his crew including Mega star Mammootty and new comer Padmapriya. It was something like rise of a new star. When we leave the theatre after seeing this movie, no doubt our mind will be as heavy as a sky filled with dark clouds, yet failed to rain as drops. He beautifully portrayed the story of a North Indian boy who gets attached to a small-town film operator’s family.
Next came, blockbuster ‘Thanmathra’ (2006) – Perhaps one among the finest 5 performances of Megastar Mohanlal. The way by which Mohanlal portrayed an Alzheimer’s patient won him many critical awards and he lost National Award to Amitabh Bachchan by just a miss. His third venture, Palungu was about an innocent villager and his family and how money and metro life changed him and his life. He portrayed child abuse also, in this movie which is really heart breaking. The first three movies were critically acclaimed ones, but all end in tragedy. But the fourth movie Calcutta News had a happy end, was well appreciated too. In this movie, he worked with Dileep and Meera Jasmine for the first time.
Again he worked with Mohanlal for Bhramaram, but it got mixed reviews. Then came his masterpiece Pranayam – A love triangle of aged people portrayed by Mohan lal, Jaya prada and Anupam Kher. It is a beautiful movie like a lovely poem or piece of art that got great reviews from critics and many awards too. Now, Hindi version with Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya prada and Anupam Kher is under production and may probably release next year.
Last movie with Swetha Menon – Kalimannu is not released till now as it acquired a lot of protests from many social workers and woman’s organizations for the real delivery scenes of Swetha Menon used in the movie. Let us hope this movie will be released soon overcoming all obstacles.
It’s really surprising that, though only 6 movies have been released till now in the past 9 years, he is considered as the best director of modern times! Let us hope, he will keep up his style of realistic cinema, yet connect with hearts of millions of Kerala audience in many years to come.
