C. V. Kunhiraman Biography
C. V. Kunhiraman was a social reformer, renaissance leader, writer and journalist from Kerala, best known as the founder of Kerala Kaumudi newspaper. This popular Malayalam newspaper was founded in 1911 by C. V. Kunhiraman, with K. Sukumaran B. A - its the founder editor. At present Kerala Kaumudi is the third most circulated Malayalam daily and also owns online printing centers from London, New York and Singapore. C. V. Kunhiraman was a strong follower of Sree Narayana Guru and his principles. He was also known as a poet, short story writer, essayist, critic, historian and lawyer. He started a school for low caste Hindus at Vellamanal and remained as its principal. It was a time when caste system was prominent in Kerala.
He was born as the son of Velayudhan and Kunhichali at Mayyanad near Kollam. He could study only till 8th standard. Yet through his brilliant skills and dedication he became one of the most prominent writers and scholars of his time. He started his career as a journalist with Sujananandini magazine published by Paravoor Kesavanasan, where he contributed poems and articles. He was a social reformer and leader known for renaissance activities and was a member of SNDP Yogam. He also remained as its general secretary in 1928 and 1931.
His first published book was Valmiki Ramayanam, published in the year 1901. It was followed by Vyasabharatam and Panchavadi and he became an established poet through the work, Karthikodayam. To rise against social injustice and evils existed in the society he took pen as his weapon and started Kerala Kaumudi in 1911. This publication has now completed 100 years. He played a significant role behind historic Temple Entry Proclamation (1936).
