Chetan Anand Biography
Chetan Anand is an Indian sportsman who plays the game of badminton. He is one of the best badminton players of the nation and has won the national badminton championship for four times in 2004, 2007, 2008 and 2010. The best world ranking in his career was Number 10 as of 12th September 2009. He also has received Arjuna Award for his talents in the game.
Chetan Anand was born on 8th July 1980 in Vijayawada in India. His father’s name is Harshavardhan and his mother’s name is Suguna. He has one younger brother named Sandeep Anand. His father had played in the inter-state Lecturer’s Tournaments and this made Chetan took a personal interest in the game.
He started practicing the game at a very young age and soon was elevated to the rank of number one in India in badminton. He completed his schooling at Veeramachineni Paddayya Siddhartha Public School and got his degree in engineering in Mechanical Manufacturing from the Potluri V Prasad Siddhartha Institute of Technology at Vijayawada. He is employed in the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation as the senior executive engineer.
He married Jwala Gutta who is also a badminton player who has won the National Badminton Doubles Championship seven times. However they had some misunderstandings and were divorced on 29th June 2011.
He started his career in badminton in 1992 when he played at the Mini Nationals in Mumbai. He paired with A. Prithvi and played in the 12 years and 15 years age group and was very successful in doubles events.
Prakash Padukone encouraged him and sent him to the World Academy camp in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia to get good training. He won his first singles title at Junior tournament in Chennai after he came back from Malaysia. He entered senior category also and was able to reach up to semifinals. In 1999 he bagged the Junior National Championship and in 2001 he won the Asian Satellite tournament conducted in Bangalore. This victory got him into the team of seniors and from then on he had won more than 15 major tournaments conducted across India.
In the National Badminton Championship of 2002 and 2003, he lost to Abhinn Shyam Gupta but won in 2004 for the first time. He suffered from back injury for quite some time and after recovering from that he won the Toulouse Open held in France in 2004. He also won the Irish and Scottish Open tournaments in 2005 and his first Grand Prix title at the Bitburger Open in 2008.
He was injured in his ankle and so he had to stay away from the game for a while and so his ranking dipped to 54 in October 2010. He serves as the brand ambassador for promoting the Li Ning Sports goods in India.
