Dev Anand Biography

Dev Anand was an Indian actor who concentrated in Hindi film industry. He was also a director and film producer. He was born on 26th September 1923 in Shakargarh Tehsil of Gurdaspur district which is now in Pakistan. His father was Kishorimal Anand. He had two brothers, Chetan Anand and Vijay Anand. Both of them were film directors. He had one sister Sheel Kanta Kapur who is the mother of the famous film director Shekar Kapur. Dev Anand studied at Government College at Lahore and got his graduation in English literature. He married Kalpana Karthick in 1954 and has a son Suneil Anand born in 1956.

 

He came to Mumbai and started his career in a military censor office for a salary of Rs.200. His debut film was Hum Ek Hain in 1946. He developed his friendship with the actor Guru Dutt. His role as a hero in the film Ziddi by Ashok Kumar for the Bombay Talkies with Kamini Kaushal in the year 1948 gave him his first big break. He started his own film producing company Navketan in 1949.

 

Guru Dutt directed his film Baazi in 1951 which was a box office hit at that time. He also played some negative characters in films like Jaal. He acted in films like Rahee, Aandhiyan, Taxi Driver, Kala Pani, Munimji, C. I. D., Paying Guest, etc. When he acted with Kalpana Kartick aka Nona Singha they fell in love with each other and married. He was also romantically involved with singer and actress Suraiya. They both paired in six films together. His first color film was Guide.


He also involved in politics. He formed a party called National Party of India which was later disbanded. His films were famous for their songs. He received Filmfare award thrice, Filmfare Best Actor award in 1958 for the film Kalapani, Filmfare Best Film award in 1966 for the film Guide and Filmfare Lifetime Achievement award in 1991. He was nominated for Filmfare award four times. He received Padma Bhushan award in 2001 and Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2002. He also received many more award and honors from various institutions. After a span of 65 years in film industry, he died of cardiac arrest at his age of 88 in London.
