Guru Bipin Singh Biography
Guru Bipin Singh was an exponent of Manipuri dance in the 20th century. He lived during the period August 23, 1918 - January 9, 2000. He spent his lifetime for the revival of Manipuri dance form and has taught numerous students. Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1966 and Kalidas Samman by Madhya Pradesh Government are the major honours received by him. He also received Shiromoni Purashkar Kolkata, The Sharangadev fellowship by Sur Shringar Samsad and Anamika Kala Sangam award, Kolkata. He was given the Title of Hanjaba by the Maharaja of Manipur. Bipin Singh played a significant role in popularizing Manipuri Dance.
Guru Bipin Singh was born on August 23, 1918 in Manipur. His father was an artist and singer who was a traditional medical practitioner too. Bipin started his association with Manipuri dance since his childhood days and fully focused on it. With the support of Manipur king, he got training from Guru Amudon Sharma. Later he started earning a living as a choreographer. Yet he didn’t give up his passion to earn name as a performer in Manipuri dance. He started two dance schools in Manipur - Govindji Nartanalaya in Imphal and Manipuri Nartanalaya in Kolkata. Govindji Nartanalaya gave training to women. He also choreographed many works for his disciples.
Famous Manipuri dancer Darshana Jhaveri and her sisters received training from Guru Bipin Singh. He also choreographed many dance pieces for the sisters. He trained numerous students who later earned fame and popularity. Among his students, the most successful were Darshana Jhaveri and his sisters and Kalavati Devi. He was a scholar, theoretician, visionary and a great guru who has popularized Manipuri dance a lot. He worked for the enrichment of Manipuri dance till his death.
