K. Surendran (writer) Biography
K. Surendran was a prominent writer belonging to Malayalam literature, who lived in the 20th century. He was best known as a novelist who lived during the period, 22 February 1921 – 9 August 1997. Maya and Guru are his prominent novels, which bagged him Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in 1963 and Vayalar Award in 1994 respectively. He was also known as a prominent short story writer and playwright of Malayalam language. Just before his death in 1997, he was conferred with the Sahitya Academy Fellowship. He has dealt with social themes through his non-fiction works and authored biographies of authors.
K. Surendran was born on 22 February 1921 in Ochira in Kollam district of Kerala. After completion of studies, he worked in government sector for many years till 1965. He worked in the Department of Post & Telegraph, and resigned his job to turn a full-time writer. He gained recognition among the masses as a story writer, and he authored both novels and short stories. In his writing career, he authored ten novels, four plays, and many other books belonging to different genres. Maya is regarded as his masterpiece work, which earned him Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in 1963. Maya address how materialism makes society hard.
His published novels include – Maya, Kattukurangu, Maranam Durbalam, Thalam, Jwala, Aruna, Seetayanam, Bhikshamdehi, Pataka, Guru, Kshanaprabhachanchalam and Shakthi. He authored the plays – Bali, Arakkillam, Palunku pathram and Anaswaramanushyan. He also authored short stories and non-fiction works such as autobiographies. His other works include - Tolstoyiyude Kadha, Manushyavastha, Novel Swaroopam, Jeevitavum Njanum, Surendrante Prabandhangal, Dostoyevskyiyude Kadha, Kumaran Asan, Kalayum Samanyajanangalum etc. Many of his published novels dealt with social issues and stigmas prevailed in the society.
