Kamala Selvaraj Biography
Kamala Selvaraj is a physician from Tamil Nadu who practises as obstetrician and gynecologist. In the year 1990 she commissioned the first test tube baby of South India. She is the daughter of famous south Indian actor Gemini Ganesan with his wife Alamelu. Bollywood diva Rekha is her half-sister. A pioneer in infertility treatment, she has assisted reproduction therapy for more than 800 babies. She is a recipient of Best Lady Doctor award (1993), Mahila Shironmani Award (1995), Rajiv Gandhi Memorial National Integration Award (1995) and many more honours.
She is one among the seven daughters of Gemini Ganeshan. She has one half-brother too. Born into family with strong connections to cinema, Kamala chose medical science as her profession, so are most other siblings. The only exception is her half-sister Rekha who went on to become a huge star in Bollywood cinema. Her mother Alamelu was the first wife of Gemini Ganeshan, and the relationship existed till the death of Gemini. Her father also had three more relationships. Yet Kamala’s mother is his only legal wife.
Four daughters were born in the wedlock of Gemini Ganesan and Alamelu. Kamala’s elder sister Revathi Swaminathan is a radiation oncologist practising in Illinois, USA. Kamala, the second daughter is a gynecologist. Her younger sister Narayani Ganesan is a journalist with The Times of India in Delhi, while the youngest is Dr. Jaya Shreedhar, a health advisor with Inter News Network. Her half-sisters (daughters of Pushpavalli) Rekha and Radha are actors, while Vijaya Chamundeswari (daughter of actress Savithri) is a fitness expert working at the G G Hospital.
Dr. Kamala Selvaraj MD, DGO, PhD is a leading Obstetrician and Gynecologist of south India. She had set her sights on higher achievements since the beginning of her career, and helped hundreds of infertile mothers to conceive. She came to limelight after she pioneered the first test tube baby in South India in 1990. Her clinic performed the first Sperm attached Oocyte Fallopian tube Transfer in 1992. She owns many firsts to her credit. Some of her major achievements include – first surrogate baby in India in 1992, first Frozen Egg (Oocyte) baby in 2008, twins were born to a patient with Mayer-Rokintansky-Kustner-Hauser Syndrome through a surrogate for the first time in South East Asia etc.
