Majrooh Sultanpuri Biography

finest Urdu poets of 20th century. He has given significant contribution to music industry from 1950’s onwards. He was active in Bollywood still his death occurred in 2000. Among his best movies, his association with Producer/Director Nasir Hussain is noted most and together they have given many musical hits like Yadom ki barat, Teesri manzil, Khayamat se Khayamat tak, Phir wohi dil laaya hoon, Dil dekhe dekho, Caravan, Baharom ke sapane, Tum sa nahi dekha, Akele hum akele tum (Hussain was dialogue writer), Pyar ka mausam, Jo jeeta wohi sikander, Zamane ko dikhana hai and Paying guest. So, his association with R.D.Burman is also to be noted, particularly for movies like Zamane ko dikhana hai, Caravan, Yadom ki barat, Pyar ka mausam, Teesri manzil and Baharom ke sapne. Their collaboration started with Paying guest. He spent 6 decades in the film industry working with almost all leading composers of Bollywood.  Majrooh has won Filmfare only once – Chahunga mein of Dost in 1964, though he has been nominated multiple times.

 

Majrooh Sultanpuri was born in Azamgarh as the son of a police officer. As he was interested in sending his son for English education, he was sent to Madrasa education which helped him to become proficient in Urdu, Arabic and Persian. He began to write ghazals seriously as his ghazals got a lot of appreciation. The famous ghazal- Main akela hee chala tha was written by none other than Majrooh. His ghazals and poems become popular in Mumbai too during 40’s. But that time he was not interested in film lyrics and refused many offers.

 

But during 1950’s he began to accept lyrics offers too and gave many memorable songs to Bollywood. He worked with music directors of 6 decades and his most memorable songs include Papa kehte hai and Akele hain of QSQT, Raja ko rani se and Dil mera churaya of Akele hum akele tum, Kya Hua Tera Waada of Hum kise se kum nahi, Aaj mein upar and Bahom ke darmiyaan of Khamoshi, Woh sikander and Pehla nasha of Jo jeeta wohi sikander and Ek Din Bik Jaayega of Dharam karam.
