Priya A. S Biography

Priya A. S is a well-known writer of Malayalam literature, best known for her translation works. She translated Arundhati Roy's acclaimed and award winning work, The God of Small Things into Malayalam. The book was titled Kunju Karyangalude Odeythampuran, and the author herself has certified that it’s the best translation of her acclaimed work. Priya also authors short stories, children's literature and memoirs. She is a recipient of numerous awards including Kerala Sahitya Academy award twice, Lalithambika Anterjanam Award, Kerala Sahitya Akademi Endowment and many more.

She is a part of post-modern literal movement, and apart from Kunju Karyangalude Odeythampuran, her other major works are Pookkathirikkan Enikkavathille and Chithrasalabhangalude Veedu. Manjamarangal Chuttilum, a short story anthology fetched her the first major award, Lalithambika Anterjanam Award. Her story collection – Jagarooka won Kerala Sahitya Academy award in 2004 and the translation work - Kunju Karyangalude Odeythampuran won the same award in translation category 10 years later. V. K. Unnikrishnan Award, Grihalakshmi Award and Ramu Kariat Award are other major honours.

Some of her memoirs are Ozhukkil Orila, Katha Bakki, Maayakkaazhchakal, Fantas Minta and Thanmayam. Chithrasalabhangalude Veedu, Ammem Kunjunnim Kunjunnim Ammem, Tha Enna Aniyathikutty, Ammem Kunjunnim Mookkurummi Mookkurummi, Perumazhayathe Kunjithalukal, Perumazhayathe Kunjithalukal etc belong to her published work in Children’s literature.

Priya A. S was born on May 28, 1967 at Eramalloor, Alappuzha, Kerala. Both her parents are teachers. During her childhood she faced a lot of difficulties due to illness and diseases. She graduated in English literature from Maharaja's College, Ernakulam and also took her master’s degree. Later she started her career as a faculty at Mahatma Gandhi University and is a senior grade assistant at Cochin University of Science and Technology.
