Raghunath Seth Biography
Raghunath Seth was a renowned flautist who performed in Hindustani music. He was also a film music composer who lived during the period, 1931 – 15 February 2014. He also composed songs for the 1988 Malayalam film 'Aaranyakam', and its songs like ‘Olichirikkaan Vallikudil’ and ‘Athmaavil Muttivilichath Pole’ penned by ONV Kurup are considered as timeless classics. He received Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1994, and many more honours during his lifetime. His flute composition "Music to help you sleep" from the album Nidra became immensely popular online. He has also done a few Bollywood film songs, and his composition "Yeh Paudhay Yeh Pattay", from the film "Ek Baar Phir" was the film song of renowned singer Anuradha Paudwal.
Pandit Raghunath Seth was born in 1931 in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. He received his early training from eminent musicologist Dr. S. N. Ratanjankar in Lucknow. At the age of 19 he moved to Mumbai, where he received training under Pandit Pannalal Ghosh of Maihar gharana. After his learning, he has performed across the country, composed many songs and has also collaborated with many artists across the globe. He also composed for many music albums and worked with several renowned artists of the music industry like K. J. Yesudas.
Seth is credited to giving many breakthroughs in the technique of flute making and playing. He added a bamboo key to his bansuri that made ease several previously impossible phrases to be played on flute. He scored music for around 2000 documentary films, a few feature films and many television serials. He also scored music for many renowned artists like Sudha Malhotra, Talat Mehmood, Asha Bhosle, Vani Jairam, Arti Mukherjee, Talat Aziz, Peenaz Masani etc. A flutist of international fame, he has served as a programme executive at All India Radio, Allahabad during its heydays.
