S. Krishnamurthy Biography
S. Krishnamurthy is a Carnatic musician, who has served as the director of All India Radio, Mysore. He is the grandson of the legendary Carnatic composer and vocalist - Mysore Vasudevachar who has contributed over 200 compositions and authored several books. He has translated his grandfather's memoirs – Nenapugalu and Na Kanda Kalavidaru into English and has also published a memoir of his own. ‘Sangeeta Samaya’ is his published book. Though he is trained in Carnatic music, he chose a white collar job as per demand of his situation.
He completed Master’s in Economics. Very soon he got a research assistant’s job at Reserve Bank of India and he decided to move to Mumbai. He was in need of a job and that’s why he accepted it, leaving behind a music journey carried over by his forefathers. By this time, his grandfather Mysore Vasudevachar was teaching Maharaja Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar Carnatic music. Maharaja had already learnt western music and Krishnamurthy used to accompany his grandfather to write down the kritis for him in western notations. When he told Maharaja that Krishnamurthy is leaving Mumbai for job purposes, Maharaja commented that, why no jobs in Mysore and he is not going anywhere. That’s how Maharaja created a post for him in AIR Mysore in 1947.
S. Krishnamurthy was born into the musical family and since childhood he was brought up in an atmosphere filled with musicians – both Carnatic and Hindustani, who used to visit his grandfather. He and his siblings grew up listening and watching these great musicians converse and sing to each other. He was initiated to music by his grandfather’s disciple – Channakeshavaih. He used to sing and was popular at school. Later he also practised Jal Tarang while at school. He used to practise music from 5 am. He has also done a concert at His Highness Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar’s court. Under King’s suggestion he was enrolled in Trinity College, Mysore. His father was interested in mridingam and theatre.
