S. Ramanan Biography 
S. Ramanan is an Indian mathematician from Chennai, Tamil Nadu known for his works on algebraic geometry, moduli spaces and Lie groups. He is one of the leading Indian mathematicians at present. His contributions to algebraic geometry, especially in the area of modulii problems have earned him world-wide recognition. He has also contributed towards abelian varieties and also vector bundles. He is the winner of Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize (1979), India's highest science prize. He is a very versatile lecturer and has also published one book on Global Calculus.
He was born in Madras Presidency in 1937. His childhood and adulthood were spent in Chennai itself. He completed his education from Ramakrishna Mission School and Vivekananda College, both from Chennai. He graduated in Mathematics and completed his PhD at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. He further carried out studies at Oxford University, Harvard University and ETH Zurich. While doing PhD, he was guided by eminent Indian mathematician, M. S. Narasimhan with whom he has collaborated for many research works later.
Later he had a long association with TIFR, carrying out his research works. He picked up the methods of modern differential geometry and worked on it later. He has guided many students and many of them became famous later. Noted mathematicians like Vijay Kumar Patodi and M S Raghunathan were encouraged by him. His noted disciples include Annamalai Ramanathan, Shrawan Kumar, N. Mohan Kumar and many more.
Apart from being a well-known mathematician, he is a Carnatic vocalist. He is married to Anuradha Ramanan and the couple has two daughters. His first daughter, Sumana Ramanan, a journalist is married to Jaikumar Radhakrishnan, a theoretical computer scientist and the second is noted mathematician - Kavita Ramanan.
