Saurabh Kumar Chaliha Biography
Saurabh Kumar Chaliha was a very famous Assamese writer. His real name was Surendra Nath Medhi. He received Sahitya Akademi Award in 1974 for the work, Golam – short story collection. In the year 1995, he was also honored with the Assam Valley Literary Award. He has worked in several educational institutions in Germany as well as India as a professor. When he retired from service in the year 1990, he was the head of Department of Physics from Assam Engineering College. He joined the service in the year 1960.
Saurabh Kumar Chaliha was born 1930 in Mangaldoi town in Assam as the son of prominent litterateur, Kaliram Medhi and Swarnalata Medhi. Chaliha did his schooling from Saint Mary's Convent School, Guwahati and completed matriculation from Cotton Collegiate School. In 1946 Chaliha joined Cotton College for studying ISc. He was a brilliant student in studies. He was also active in communist party during his college days. His association with RCPI resulted in arrest and jail also. He wrote BSc final examination from the jail. He completed his MSc in physics from London University.
After completing his education, he joined as a faculty. Chaliha worked in several educational institutions in Germany and returned to Assam in 1960. His stories first appeared in Assamese magazines and literary journals. He has written short stories bulk in number and published as anthologies. Ashanta Electron (1962), Duporiya (1963), Ehat Daba (1972), Golam (1974), Golpo Nohoi (1988), Aji Sukrobar (1992), Abarudha Sahar (1994), Bhal Khobor (1998), Kabi (1999), Ekoish Sotika Dhemali Nohoi (2004), Janmadin (2005), Jonbiri (2006), Dron aru Goethe (2007), Nabajanma (2008) and Marudyan (2009) are his published books. Swa-Nirbasito Xonkolon, Rachana Samagra, Soi Dasakar Golpo and Saurav Kumar Chaliha Rasanawali are his compilation works.
