Sheikh Showkat Hussain Biography

Sheikh Showkat Hussain is an eminent political analyst and a prominent scholar of human rights and international law from Kashmir. He is a University professor, author, columnist and human rights activist also, who has authored non-fiction books on the Kashmir conflict. As an academician he started his career in the year 1987 and has worked under many colleges and universities. Currently he is an associate professor at School of Legal Studies at the Central University of Kashmir. His doctorate thesis "The Status of Non-Muslims in Islamic state" was published as a book - "Minorities, Islam and Nation state" in Malaysia.

 

He was born on 5 February 1954 in Kashmir. He completed LLB in 1978 from Aligarh Muslim University, and also took Master’s in Law and PhD. Since college days, he was associated with students’ politics and has participated in an election campaign against statesman Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah during his graduation studies. While studying LLB at Aligarh Muslim University, he remained an activist involved in many protests. He also has been a researcher on student activism, conducting many surveys across the nation.

 

He is specialized in in Human Rights, minority rights and Humanitarian Law and authored many research works on this subjects. He served as the research associate, Institute of Objective Studies New Delhi during the period, 1987–1990 before he moved to Malaysia to continue his career in academics. At that time when he felt extreme insurgency in Kashmir, he decided to move back. He provided support through his regular writings in local dailies. He joined Department of Law, University of Kashmir in the year 2000. Yet he continued to contribute with his writings.
