Sujatha Rangarajan Biography
Rangarajan was a famous Tamil writer who wrote in the pseudonym, Sujatha. Sujatha was none other than his wife. In the career spanning to about 4 decades, he has authored over 100 novels, 250 short stories, 10 books on science, a few poems and 10 stage plays. He was one of the most popular writers in Tamil literature and columnist who used to regularly write in periodicals such as Ananda Vikatan, Kumudam and Kalki. He has also worked as editor of Kumudam for a brief period. Apart from his literal contributions, he has also done screenplays and dialogues for a few movies. His association with top directors like Shankar and Mani Ratnam need special mention. He was working on Shankar's Enthiran before he died on February 27, 2008.
Rangarajan was born in Triplicane, Chennai on May 3, 1935. His childhood days were spent at Srirangam near Tiruchirapalli. After schooling at Srirangam, he studied at St. Joseph's College, Trichy, where he was a classmate of former Indian President Abdul Kalam. Sujatha graduated in physics in the year 1954. From the Madras Institute of Technology, he took B E in electronics. He started his writings while studying at college. His first short story was published in Kumudam magazine in 1962. Srirangathu Devathaigal - a series of short stories and Kolaiyuthir Kalam – novel are his earliest works.
Rangarajan was an engineer by profession and hence proficient in technology. He started his career in Civil Aviation Department of Government of India followed by Bharat Electronics Limited in Bangalore. He wrote a few books on science as well. Rangarajan’s works are noted for its simple language. He has been associated with Mani Ratnam for Iruvar, Kannathil Muthamittal, Aayitha Ezhuthu and Shankar for Boys, Anniyan, Indian, Mudhalvan, Sivaji, and Enthiran. Niramatra Vanavil, Adhalinaal Kaadhal Seiveer, Kolaiyuthir Kalam, En Iniya Iyanthira, Sorga Theevu and Meendum Jeano are his noted published works.
