Sultan Singh Rathore Biography
Sultan Singh Rathore was a former police officer associated with Rajasthan Police, who served as Chief. He served as the chief of Rajasthan Police during the time period, 7 November 1968 to 16 February 1974, for more than 6 years. One of the famous and efficient police officers from Rajasthan in the post-independent period, he started his professional career in the year 1946 when he was appointed as a Sub-Inspector in Jodhpur, and later rose to the ranks to become police chief after 22 years. He died due to heart failure while at service in1974. He completed his graduation and law studies before joining police force in 1946, just before Indian independence.
Sultan Singh Rathore was born on April 1, 1916 in the village of Chordiya, in the district of Jodhpur in Rajasthan. Laxman Singh Rathore and Mahtab Kanwar were his parents. Ratan Kanwar is his wife, and the couple had two children, one son named Prabhu Singh Rathore and a daughter named Chandrakanta. Childhood days of Sultan Singh Rathore were spent in his hometown Jodhpur, where he completed his schooling and graduation. Later he did L.L.B from Law College, Hindu University, Banaras and joined police service in 1946.
He was promoted to Hakim in 1st class Magistrate of Jodhpur. In 1948 he was promoted to Major in the army. Once again he was transferred to police service the same year, and joined as Superintendent of Police in his hometown Jodhpur. He later served the same post at Alwar, Jaipur and Bharatpur towns. He became Deputy Inspector General of Police in 1952, followed by DIGP Rajasthan Armed Constabulary at Jodhpur in 1963. In 1968, he became Inspector General of Police, a position that he held till his death in 1974.
