Talat Aziz Biography
Talat Aziz is a very popular ghazal singer who hails from Hyderabad. He is equally versatile while singing a popular sufi numbers or melodious popular songs. A few of his popular albums include - Jagjit Singh presents Talat Aziz, Suroor, A Tribute to the Master Mehdi Hasan, Mehboob, Shahkaar, Dhadkan, Destiny, Manzil, Storms, Khubsoorat, Khushnuma, Saughaat and Tasavvur. He has recorded numerous songs for HMV, Venus Records, Universal Music India and Saregama Music. He has sung the popular song, "Aaina Mujhse Meri" for the movie Daddy. Talat Aziz is the uncle of famous tennis player – Sania Mirza.
Talat Aziz was born in Hyderabad as the son of Abdul Azeem Khan and Sajida Abid. His mother is a famous Urdu poet and writer. His family was deeply interested in music and ghazals and used to organize mehfils at their home. Jagjit Singh and Jan Nisaar Akhtar used to visit their home. Talat Aziz took his initial training in music from Kirana Gharana where he received training from Ustad Samad Khan and Ustad Fayaz Ahmed. As a performer, his first performance was done in his home city Hyderabad. Later while doing concerts in India and abroad, he used to share same space with legend – Mehdi Hassan.
He moved to Mumbai in 1976 as suggested by Ghazal king, Jagjit Singh. He became a disciple of Mehdi Hassan in 1978, which was his solo aim at that time. With the help of Jagjit Singh, Aziz released his first album in 1979 titled, “Jagjit Singh Presents Talat Aziz”. Yet for several years he had to struggle to become a popular figure. During 80’s, he has sung songs for movies - Umrao Jaan and Bazaar. Both are critically well acclaimed movies, remembered for its music as well.
Later he has composed music for Doordarshan serials and has acted in a few as well. Deewar, Baaz, Adhikaar, Ghutan, Sailaab, Aashirwaad and Noorjahan are a few such. In 1990, he acted as a hero opposite Sangeeta Bijlani, Dhun directed by Mahesh Bhatt. But this movie was not released. But HMV released its songs and songs like ' Main Aatma tu Parmaatma' and 'Yaad aane waale Laagi prem dhun laagi' made him a popular figure. After that he became a known ghazal singer with a lot of fan following crowd. ‘Khoobsurat hai aakhein teri’ is one of his most memorable ghazals he has sung till now. Now Talat is busy with his live concerts and has completed his silver jubilee in singing field as well.
