Ved Prakash Malik Biography

Ved Prakash Malik was the Army Chief during the Kargil War. General Ved Prakash Malik was born in Dera Ismail Khan, North West Frontier Province, British India served as the 19th Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army from 30 September 1997 till 30 September 2000. 

General Malik attended the National Defense College (NDC) in New Delhi in 1986. He served as Deputy Director General of Military Operations from 1987 to 1990 during which he dealt with operational plans for the defence of northern borders as also two international operations of Indian Peace Keeping Force operations in Sri Lanka and Operation Cactus in Maldives. In mid-1989, he was appointed GOC-in-C of the 8th Mountain Division which was initially deployed in counter-insurgency operations in North East Frontier Agency. 

General Ved Prakash took over charge of the Indian Army, as the 19th Chief of Army Staff, on 30 September 1997. General Ved Prakash was commissioned into the Sikh Light Infantry on 07 June 1959. He saw action in the 1962 Indo-China border conflict in the Ladakh sector. He commanded the 10th Sikh Infentory on the Indo-China border and played an active role in counter-insurgency operations in Nagaland from 1974 to 1977.

Malik received the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and the Param Vishisht Seva Medal for distinguished service to the Indian Army and to the nation. He was also for military to military cooperation between India and the US. "We have to recognise our different capabilities. We can learn from each other and cooperate in the maintenance of international peace. 

At present General Malik has settled in Panchkula in Haryana State, after his retirement He tries to keep himself engaged spreading awareness and sharing his views on India's national security challenges and international relations, in India and abroad.
