Pulicat Lake in Chennai

Pulicat Lake is called Pazhaverkaadu Eri in Tamil. It is located in the border of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Near this lake is situated the Pulicat Lake Bird Sanctuary which spreads over an area of 321 square kilometers. The birds like great thick-knee, Asian open bill stork, greater flamingos, osprey, etc are found here.
The shallow lake makes it a favorite spot of the aquatic birds and more than 15,000 greater Flamingos visit the lake every year. The painted storks, spoonbills, ducks, herons, kingfishers and pelicans are also found here. 59 species of aquatic vegetation has been recorded.
Sailing in the fishing boats, catamaran rides and floating on the lagoons are some of the activities to perform here. It is better to visit this place as a gang. The bird watchers must be there at the early morning and at the fall of the day.
Other places of interest near Pulicat Lake are Nellapatu Bird Sanctuary, the Dutch Cementry and Vedanthangal Bird’s Sanctuary.
