Local Transportation in New Delhi
Local Transportation in New Delhi
Travelling around New Delhi is itself an adventure. New Delhi is famous for its congested traffic. The means of local transportation in New Delhi are Metro, local train, buses, auto rickshaws, taxis, cycle rickshaws and cabs.
Transportation in New Delhi by Bus
All the areas of New Delhi are connected by buses and the ticket fare would be from 5 INR to 15 INR. Though this is the cheapest means of transport, buses are crowded at times. If you want to travel by air-conditioned buses, then you have to board red colored ones.
The Delhi Transport Corporation runs red and green colored buses and the private Blue Line buses are orange in color. DTC buses are less crowded and there are low floored buses for people with mobility impairments. The manual ramp is operated on request for the wheel chair users.
Hop On Hop Off bus service serves the purposes of the tourists. You can hop off at any stop and hop on into the next bus after you explored the place. These are air-conditioned buses and run every 30 minutes interval. It covers all the major destinations at Delhi and has online booking facility and audio guides. The cost of the ticket is 300 INR and is valid for two days consecutively. These buses do not operate on Mondays. The helpline number is +91 11 4094 0000.
Transportation in New Delhi by Metro
Delhi Metro is the cheapest, safest and reliable means of local transportation in New Delhi. There are six lines in operation in Delhi Metro and the charges range from Rs. 8 to Rs. 30.
Red Line running from Dilshad Garden to Rithala
Yellow Line running from Jahangirpuri to HUDA City Center in Gurgaon
Blue Line running from Dwarka Sector 9 to Noida City Centre through Vaishali
Green Line running from Inderlok to Mundka
Violet Line running from Central Secretariat to Badarpur Border
Airport Express running from New Delhi Railway Station to Dwarka through Airport
You also save 10% on travel by buying a smart card for Rs 100. The Tourist Card is also available for Rs. 100 which allows unlimited use for one day and Rs. 250 allowing unlimited usage for 3 days. The fares are different for Airport Express.
Delhi Metro is easy for people with reduced mobility having facilities like lifts, low height counters, wider doors and separate space for wheel chairs. It also has paid toilet facility. The local trains are not user friendly as the stations are located at inconvenient places.
Transportation in New Delhi by Auto Rickshaws
The auto rickshaws are good for short distance commutation in New Delhi. These three wheeled vehicles can accommodate three people and run on CNG. They are very cheap and provide point to point transport and the charges are based on the meter in the vehicle. The minimum charges will be Rs. 20 that cover the first two kilometers and then the charges are Rs. 6.50 per kilometer. But many of them operate on fixed rate and it is better to negotiate the fare before boarding an auto rickshaw to reach a particular place. There are also prepaid auto stands which are run by the Delhi police.
Transportation in New Delhi by Taxi
The Delhi taxis are cheaper and comfortable means of transport. Various types of vehicles are available like Ambassadors, Omnis, Toyota Innova, Chevrolet Tavera, etc. They are equipped with meters and a trip around the city should cost about Rs. 300 to Rs. 500. But the trip to the airport will be higher. If you want to hire them for eight hours then the fare would be Rs. 1500 plus a tip for the driver.
The modern radio taxis are available at a rate of Rs. 20 per kilometer. The modern vehicles with air-conditioned facility and GPS facility are operated 24 hours a day. 25% night charges are applicable between 11 P.M to 5 A.M. You can book them online and you will get an SNS with the details of the vehicle and mobile number and name of the driver.
