Adil Writer Biography

Adil Writer is an Indian artist best known for his ceramic work. He is a ceramic artist, painter and architect from Mumbai, currently based in Auroville, Tamil Nadu, where he works as an architect in the township. He has exhibited his works in ceramics and paintings in solo exhibitions in different parts of the country and in some foreign nations such as Japan, Indonesia etc. He is a partner at Mandala Pottery and owns a studio through which he creates his own line of studio pottery.

 

Adil Writer was born and brought up in Mumbai. He is an architect-turned-potter and painter. He studied pottery at Golden Bridge Pottery, Pondicherry, before he pursued a career in this field. He very often puts lines from songs on his pottery and his paintings, to bring great difference to his art pieces. He scribbles lines and verses of lyricists and songwriters on his pots and paintings. He won the first prize at a miniature teapot competition in Croatia in 2009.

 

Writer moved to Auroville, the international township near Pondicherry in the year 2000. He became a partner in a firm called Mandala Pottery after that. Currently he is living and working in Auroville, where he is a partner at Mandala Pottery and owns his own line of studio pottery. Mandala Pottery produces Functional tableware, assorted ceramic items, and architectural ceramic murals & installations.

 

He was a successful young architect who decided to switch to pottery. He is a trained masseur too. After graduating from Mumbai’s Sir J.J. College of Architecture, he first worked with T. Khareghat & Associates, an architecture firm. After two years he enrolled at the University of Houston in Texas to do a master’s degree. He worked with Gensler & Associates, a San Francisco-based global architecture for a brief period after that. However he was dissatisfied by the job and moved back to Mumbai.

 

As a part of his job, he had frequent trips to South India, and at one occasion he enrolled for a pottery course at Golden Bridge Pottery run by acclaimed potters, Deborah Smith and Ray Meeker. After two years he was completely convinced to change the job profile. So he gave up full-time architecture and moved to Auroville.
