Gargi Raina Biography
Gargi Raina is an Indian artist and painter who hails from Gujarat. Vadodara is her hometown. Constructing the Memory of a Room, Paintings and Installations from 2001-07, is one of her major solo exhibitions which she conducted at Bodhi Art, New Delhi in 2007,Sakshi Gallery, Mumbai in 1999 and 1996. She currently serves as the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda since 1996. She organised protest events during the 2002 anti-Muslim pogroms in Gujarat. Raina frequently conducts art workshops of aspiring artists in different parts of the country and abroad.
Gargi Raina now lives in Vadodara, Gujarat. Her family is originally of Kashmiri origin. Her ancestors were settled in Lahore during British rule, and after partition her family moved to India and settled in Delhi. She was born in New Delhi in 1961. After graduating in arts from Delhi University, to pursue a career in the field of art and painting, Gargi enrolled at Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in the 1980s, and also completed Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Painting. After that she turned a full-fledged painter. Gargi is also a renowned teacher who teaches numerous students.
She has participated in several group exhibitions in the different parts of the country, apart from a few solo ones. Lo Real Maravilloso: Marvelous Reality at Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, 2009 is one such memorable exhibition. She regularly conducts exhibitions at Mumbai and New Delhi, mostly as a part of group exhibition. She represented Bodhi Art, Gallery Threshold and Palette Art Gallery at Taipei Artists Village in Taiwan for which she was awarded. She loves working with the idea of stretching time.
