Gourahari Das Biography
Gourahari Das is an Indian writer, journalist and an academician from the state of Odisha. He hails from Bhadrak district. He authored popular books like Chayasoudho Ro Absesha and Nijo Sange Nijoro Lodhei. His works include crime, drama, history, travel, poetry etc, and he is a recipient of Sahitya Akademi Award. His first book “Juara Bhatta”, a collection of short stories, was published in 1981. He is associated with Sahitya Akademi since 2008- first as a Member of Odia Advisory Board and then a Member of Executive Board and General Council.
Gourahari Das was born on 9 October 1960 in Sandhagada, Bhadrak district, Odisha. He was born into a remote village in the district of Bhadrak. During his childhood days he faced a lot of hardships. He also struggled a lot to complete his education. He left his home at the age of eight and lived in a monastery. He completed his education with the help of a scholarship. After school he moved to Cuttack, where he did odd jobs to complete his education. He worked during dayhours and studied in evening colleges, and finally completed his graduation and PG. Later he studied MJMC and was awarded a Gold Medal. He also completed his PhD.
Since young he was interested in writing fictional short stories. He published his first short story "Kshinaloka" in a magazine at the age of 15. His first book “Juara Bhatta” was published in 1981. He also wrote columns in newspaper ‘Sambad’ which were very popular. He joined the daily as a sub-editor and later rose to the position of editor. Since 2007 he serves as the Principal of Sambad School of Media and Culture.
