Mumbiram Biography
Mumbiram is a contemporary classical painter and author from Pune who spearheaded Rasa Renaissance art movement in India, based on the classical rasa theory of Sanskrit literature. He is the son of famous lawyer Ramdas Paranjpe and grandson of famous water color artist S. H. Godbole. The artist was his maternal grandfather. Mumbiram has given new dimension to some of art works in charcoal and colour media, and his acclaimed works were done on this media where he portrayed folk India and rural life. He introduced an indigenous art movement and created the Manifesto of Personalism in Indian scene.
Mumbiram hails from Pune, Maharashtra. He was born into a family of intellectuals, and has links with artistic world through his mother, daughter of well-known painter S. H. Godbole. He was born as the son of the famous lawyer Ramdas Paranjpe in Pune. His maternal grandfather remained the secretary of the Bombay Art Society in the 1930s. R. P. Paranjpe, the first Indian to top the Mathematical Tripos exam at Cambridge was his great uncle. Born into a family of intellectuals, Mumbiram is hailed as a child prodigy who showed his artistic skills since younger days and he regularly won many art competitions.
Like his great uncle R. P. Paranjpe, he was attracted to Mathematics and science subjects during his teens. He also completed Telecommunication Engineering in 1967 with excellent marks. He later took Master’s in Mathematical systems from University of California followed by a Ph.D. in 1973. Even while busy with his studies of science and mathematics, he approached everything with a philosophical mentality. Mumbiram spent six more years in America as an itinerant philosopher and artist. He read a wide variety of Sanskrit classics and got attached to many characters of Hindu mythology which he explored through his works later.
