P. U. Chitra Biography
P. U. Chitra is an Indian athlete from the state of Kerala. She is a runner and a winner of numerous international championships. She won gold medals at the 2016 South Asian Games and 2017 Asian Championships, followed by gold in women’s 1500m race at Asian athletics championships held at Dhoha in 2019, winning third gold to India. She belongs to a very poor and humble family, with both her parents working as daily labours. Her stunning wins at athletic meets, overcoming all odds deserve a loud noise of applause.
Her full name is Palakkeezhil Unnikrishnan Chithra. She was born on 9 June 1995 in Mundoor, Palakkad. Unnikrishan & Vasantha Kumari are her parents and both are agricultural laborers. For the same reason they couldn’t afford her healthy and protein diet. Her initial coaching was also given by her drill master Sijin V S, and he played a magnificent role in shaping her early phase in athletics as well as earning a few international gold medals. She studied at Mundur Higher Secondary School in Palakkad and since her school days, she had made some stunning wins in athletics, winning gold in most of the competitions.
Despite having a shining win at Asian Championship with the gold medal in the women's 1500m in 2017, she was denied entry to World Athletics Meet held at London the same year. Earlier many believed that her stunning win at Asian Championship would provide her a direct entry to World Athletics Meet, which never happened. Instead she was rejected a ticket citing that her performance was not up to the mark. Later she received support from all corners, and the matter also created a controversy for locking horns with Athletic Federation. With her stunning win at Asian athletics championships, she proved her talent, giving a reply to those selectors who rejected her once.
