Pushpa Bhuyan Biography

Pushpa Bhuyan was a famous dancer from Assam who performed in Bharatnatyam and Sattriya classical dance forms. She has also tutored numerous students. In 2002 Government of India honoured her with Padma Shri for her outstanding contributions to Indian art. She learned Sattriya from Bhabananda Barbayan and Bharatnatyam under Guru Mangudi Dorairaja Iyer. A recipient of the North East Television Lifetime Achievement Award, she passed away, after prolonged illness, at her Vasant Kunj house on 7 October 2015 aged 69. She was married to Naba Kamal Bhuyan, a prominent cricketer of his time.

 

Pushpa Bhuyan was born in Jorhat, Assam in the year 1946. She married Naba Kamal Bhuyan, a cricketer. She was a maestro of Bharat Natyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Manipuri and Sattriya dance forms – one among the rarest Assamese artists to excel in south Indian art forms. She is also among the few artists from Assam who took south Indian art forms as profession. She learnt Bharatnatyam from great Rukmini Devi. Bhuyan learnt Kathak from Guru Vishnu Vaishalkar and she started her professional career at the age of 18 under her Guru Kubernath Pillai. Since then she has been credited several performances India and abroad.

 

She was the first Assamese to take up Bharat Natyam as profession. She has performed in most of the Sabhas of Chennai with Kubernath Pillai as the Nattuvanar. She continued her performances after marriage and later with her three daughters. She also ran a dance school in Melbourne, Australia and at Lille, France. She has been suffering from nerve problems since last 12 years and has even survived many situations till death took her away in October 2015.
