The state of Rajasthan beholds some of the most amazing tourist destinations in the world. In the midst of the arid desert, and in the westernmost frontier of India sits a ‘Golden City’- Jaisalmer, Rajasthan’s most striking and breathtaking town. It is situated close to the Pakistan border and also has a close proximity to the Thar Desert. Jaisalmer is dominated by splendid palaces, forts and havelis that are designed intricately and are rooted in rich history and culture. Every architectural structure in Jaisalmer has some interesting tales to disclose unveiling the magnificent past before us vividly. The fort, havelis and palaces in Jaisalmer stands as a testimony to the rich cultural past of the country reflecting too the spellbinding works of the masterminds. Jaisalmer derived its name after Maharaja Jaisal of the Bhatti Rajput clan established the city in 1156.
The Jaisalmer fort breathes the era of the bygone years while also living avidly in the present with the incessant bustling of the town life in its midst. The fort was constructed ingeniously out of yellow stone hence; another name for it is “Sonar Kila”. The charming look of the fort evokes a fairy tale image in the eyes of the visitors. The golden hues of the sun give an ornamental look to the fort creating an ambience of peace and serenity all around. The fort walls also encompass seven skilfully engraved Jain temples. The temple dates back to the 12th-15th century and even today does not fail to grasp the attention of the visitors.
The GadiSar Lake is another tourist attraction which is bordered by numerous temples and tombs. The region also houses a cultural centre and a local museum for enlightening the travellers of the cultural diversity.
While on your tour to Jaisalmer make sure you go for the camel safari. It is one of the main attractions in Jaisalmer. If you are not too comfortable sitting on a camel, jeep safari comes as a good substitute. Watching the sunset while it magnifies the beauty of the fort is also an enduring sight. The fort also houses several shops that sell leather goods, embroidered work on silk and cotton, handicraft items and garments etc.
A visit to the place will take you back to the past when the fort was first built. The golden sand of the desert delivers the perfect backdrop to Jaisalmer taking you into an ever so endearing a journey of the bygone eras.
