On the bank of the majestically flowing Brahmaputra River lies the sprawling Kaziranga National Park that stretches over an area of 430 sq-kms. Precisely it is located in the far North Eastern corner of the state of Assam, the Karbi Anglong and the Mikir hills forming a scenic backdrop. From Guwahati –the gateway to the North East the Kaziranga National Park is located at a distance of 217 km. The year 1940 saw the park being acknowledged as a wild life sanctuary. It is the abode of an extensive number of wildlife species, the hero being the one horned rhino. The bio-diversity of the National park is enormous and it is enthralling an experience to see the various animal species moving about freely in their natural habitat. The muddy swamps prove to be ideal for the thriving of such an extensive number of flora and fauna. You can catch them in all their moods and temperament. It is a perfect paradise for all wildlife enthusiasts.
It is home to two third of the world’s population of Rhino, abundant population of Sloth Bears, wild Boar wild Indian Elephant, Swamp Deer or Barasingha, Hog Deer, Leopard Cats, Hog Badgers, Jungle Cats, Otters, Capped Langurs, Indian Bison, Hoolock Gibbons, Jackal, Monitor Lizards, Wild Buffalo, Pythons and various species of butterflies. It also houses a wide variety of birds like the Black Kite, Grey-Headed Fishing, Pallas’s Fishing Eagle, Oriental Honey Buzzard, Black-Shouldered Kite, Brahminy Kite, White Tailed Eagle and the Himalayan Griffon. Glimpses of some beautiful migratory birds can be had. The prominent migratory birds are the Grey Pelican, Black-Necked Stock, Great Pied Hornbill and Green Imperial pigeon.
Along with the varied fauna, Kaziranga National Park also has an abundance of flora. In the wetland of this park you will discover such plants as lilies, lotus and water hyacinth. Tall elephant grasses are dominant plants in this park and merging with the semi-green bushes it creates a lively atmosphere in the park adding to its beauty. The Brahmaputra River flowing at the bank flirts with the lively nature of the park generating tender atmosphere all around.
One can opt for jeep safari, or elephant safari to explore the park in all its environs and vicinity. The elephants are trained and they are guided by Mahouts. Deep inside the jungle on the back of the elephant gives one a great opportunity to perceive the fauna and flora in their natural habitat.
The Kaziranga National Park is well connected with road and hence can be easily reached. Other places that can be visited are the numerous coffee and tea plantations of the Karbi Anglong, Methoni, Difalu, Behora etc.
