Dharani Selvakumar Biography
Dharani Selvakumar is an Indian surfer from Tamil Nadu. He hails from a fishing community from Chennai, who completed his Computer Engineering studies, but took his passion of surfing as his profession. Apart from winning several surfing competitions across the country, he also trains students and celebrities of south Indian film industry. Currently he works as an instructor at Covelong Point Social Surf School. He remained the national champion at the Indian Open of Surfing in year 2016. Over the years when the game of surfing has gained popularity in the coastal belt of south India, many fishermen kids are coming into this unique sport and taking it as profession.
He was born into a poor fisherman family in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. One of the most promising young surfing talents of India right now, he is one among the leading fishermen surfers of the country too. He got guidance from India’s first champion of surfing, D. Manikandan, fondly called Appu. As Dharini started surfing, his family wasn't too fond of him surfing too much. All of this changed when Dharini won 3rd place for Stand-Up Paddle at India Surf Festival 2012 in Puri, Orissa. His life changed after this competition, and sports enthusiasts started recognising him. He later won the Juniors Category at Covelong Point Classic Surf 2013
Dharini is known for his unique talents and he mastered this sport easily. He can pull off several surfing tricks like cutback, floaters, etc. His great advantage is that he lives just in front of one of India's better surf spots. Dharani had a first class training ground, and later he was trained professionally. Over the years he progressed nicely and has a bright surfing future.
