Nirmal Chettri Biography
Nirmal Chettri is an Indian footballer who plays mainly as a defender for FC Goa. He has also played for Kerala blasters in the opening season of Indian Super League in 2014, apart from many other football clubs across the country. Chettri began his footballing career in 2000, and went on to become a very popular player, and he has been a part of senior national football team as well as junior. He played as a team member of India U17 in 2005, India U23 during 2009–2013 and is a member of national team since 2011.
Nirmal Chettri was born on 21 October 1990 in Melli, Sikkim. He played football for the first time for Namchi Sports Hostel in year 2000 as a junior player at the age of 10. His talent as a footballer was noticed by Baichung Bhutia as a part of Search for More Bhaichung's campaign by government of Sikkim. In 2002 Chettri played for Namchi in the Subroto Cup and as a captain he led the team to the final. But the team lost to Mizoram 1–2. Chettri won 3 National Talent Scholarships from the AIFF in the following years, just before he joined Sports Academy of Sikkim.
He played for Sikkim in the 2006–07 Santosh Trophy, and following his outstanding performances, he was signed for Air India FC of the I-League in 2007. As a senior player, his career began with Air India, and after that he has played for many leading clubs such as East Bengal, Mohun Bagan, Mohammedan, Kerala Blasters, Dempo etc. He has also played for NorthEast United FC and NorthEast United FC. He was signed for FC Goa, most recently in 2018.
