Ranjitsinhji Biography
Ranjitsinhji was the ruler of the Indian princely state of Nawanagar during the period 1907-1933. But he is best known as an Indian cricketer who played for British (England cricket team). He was one of the earliest players of the game cricket from India and he excelled as a batsman who revolutionized batting using his new introduced style. Fondly called Ranji, he is widely regarded as one of the greatest batsmen of all time. He made his international test debut in the year 1896 against Australia and played his last test match against Australia in 1902. He made 989 runs in the 15 test matches he played during that short period. He also played first class cricket. The famous Ranji Trophy was started in 1934 in his honour is one of the prestigious cricket match series of India.
Ranjitsinhji was born on 10 September 1872 in Sadodar in Kathiawar. He was born into a Rajput farmer family. His family was related to the princely state of Nawanagar. The family lived in a stone fort in the village. Ranjitsinhji was sent to live with relations in Dhrangadhra by his family members, as his father Jiwansinhji was living a notorious drunkard’s life. But Ranjitsinhji was sensitive about his family and tried to create a positive image about his family members. Kalubha, the son of Vibhaji was the heir to the throne. However due to his violence and bad reputation, the ruler dishonoured him and later adapted Ranjitsinhji as his heir.
Prior to it, the first selected heir died due to some mysterious reasons. Ranjitsinhji ‘s adoption had been carried out in secret, for fear of Vibhaji's wives. Yet Kalubha kept trying to make his son the heir. Ranjitsinhji completed his education with the financial help provided by Vibhaji, given as allowance. But he deeply hurt by his disinheritance. But British were greatly influenced by the talents of Ranjitsinhji. Later he moved to England where he studied at Cambridge University.
He was introduced to cricket at the age of 10. He joined Cambridgeshire County Cricket Club in 1891 while he was studying in Britain. Later he played University games followed by his debut in England test team. He scored fast with his bat and was known for his batting skills. Ranjitsinhji made his Test debut on 16 July 1896. After a declining career he returned to India for an unsuccessful attempt to become the ruler and returned back to England to continue his test career. After many attempts he became the ruler of Nawanagar during the period 1907-1933.
As a ruler he re-structured his capital, constructed new roads and railways, and built a great port with modern facilities. He stood against the advance of democracy, the Independence Movement and also tried to reunite princes of princely states.
