Samresh Jung Biography
Samresh Jung is an Indian shooter and Olympic participant. He is a specialist in the air pistol category. He won two gold medals in 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, one in the men’s free pistol pairs and another in the open even of 25m standard pistol pairs in partnership with Jaspal Rana. He was born on 5th May 1970 in Haripur Khol village in Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh. His father is Shailesh Jung, a retired colonel of Indian army. His grandfather Sher Jung was an Indian freedom fighter and an ace shooter. From him, Samresh Jung also took an interest in shooting.
He completed his schooling at the Modern School in Delhi and then continued his higher education at the Osmania University at Hyderabad and got his graduation. He is also a good chess player. He is employed with the CISF and is living in New Delhi.
In 2002 Commonwealth Games held at Manchester, he got two gold medals and two silver medals. In 2006 Commonwealth Games held at Melbourne, he came out with eight medals, five gold, one silver and one bronze. After winning one silver and five gold medals he could only get bronze in the 25m centre fire pistol individual event. In the standard fire pistol individual competition, his gun malfunctioned and he could not win in that event. He received David Dixon Award in the series that recognize him as the Best Athlete of the 18th Commonwealth Games. In 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, he took part in both 10m air pistol and 50m pistol events but could not reach the finals in both these events.
He received Arjuna Award in the year 2002. He grabbed gold medal in the Indian National Games 2005 and Fifth Commonwealth Shooting Championship 2005. Bearing the Queen’s Baton in the opening ceremony of the 2010 Commonwealth Games held at Delhi on 3rd October 2010 was a rare honor conferred on him. He was called as Goldfinger by the volunteers. He has won many medals in various events.
