Swami Shambhavananda Biography
Swami Shambhavananda is a Hindu religious monk and yoga instructor and the founder of Shambhava Yoga. He is affectionately known to his students as “Babaji”. He dedicated a lifetime to serving those who seek inner change through the ancient disciplines of yoga. He is originally from western Pennsylvania. He describes Shambhava Yoga as “the direct experience and insight into one’s true inner nature, available to anyone who is ready to surrender the distractions of the mind and open their heart”. He has been teaching yoga for the past 40 years. He started three ashrams, 7 centres and published two books as well. He also inspired the development of numerous Shambhava Yoga centers at different parts of the world.
Shambhavananda was born and raised on a dairy farm in the hilly area of western Pennsylvania. Since young he realized how spiritual understand would lead to happiness and better life. Swami Rudrananda was his first spiritual teacher, and then he continued his learning from Swami Muktananda. He was with Swami Rudrananda for a relatively short time – less than two years till his death. But the impact he received persisted for long years. He roamed around Manhattan with him, watching him and listening. His guru taught him how to remain normal, be in culture and still have a very deep spiritual life in this world.
Soon after the death of Swami Rudrananda, he got a phone call at the ashram in Indiana where he lived. Actually he didn’t feel the loss of guru as soon as heard about it. But after two-three days, he felt the emptiness, yet was grateful for what he got from guru for the past two years. Later he continued his learning from Swami Muktananda. He founded Shambhava Yoga, and has been teaching the same for the past 40 years in US.
