Tarundeep Rai Biography
Tarundeep Rai is an Indian sportsman competing in the game of archery. He has grabbed many medals in the international events including Asian Games. He has received Arjuna Award from the Government of India for his talents in archery. He is supported by Olympic Gold Quest.
Tarundeep was born on 22nd February 1984 in Namchi in Sikkim. His father’s name is Dil Bor and his mother’s name is Meena Rai. He is the second of his three siblings. He belongs to Gorkha community. His father is a professional photographer. Baichung Bhutia, the popular footballer is his cousin.
The television series Ramayana inspired him to try archery and when he was a small child he used to practice the game with bamboo sticks and arrows. At his age of 13, he was picked up by the scouts of the Army Boys Sports Company in Shillong and at 17 he was enrolled in the Army.
He soon became a professional archer when he played at the Asian Archery Championship 2003 at Yangon in Myanmar. When he scored the bronze medal at the National Archery Championship 2004 held at Jamshedpur, he was looked upon as an excellent archer. He won silver medal at the World Championship 2005 in Madrid in Spain.
He represented India at the 2004 Summer Olympics but could not win any medal and ended up with 11th place. He however showed good performance and won silver at the Asian Games held on 24th November 2010 and bronze at 15th Asian Games in Doha in 2006. He represented India at the 2012 London Olympics in the men’s recurve team on 21st June 2012.
