Cliff Richard Biography

Cliff Richard is a British singer, musician, performer, actor and philanthropist. He was born in India in 1940, and spent his early childhood days in Lucknow and later moved from here, following Indian independence. His father was a manager for a catering contractor that serviced the Indian Railways in British India. Richard has sold more than 250 million records worldwide. He is the third-top-selling artist in UK Singles Chart history, behind the Beatles and Elvis Presley. His total sale of records in UK is more than 21 million singles.

Cliff Richard was born to British parents in Lucknow, British India in year 1940. His father Harry Rodger Webb was a manager for a catering contractor. His family lived in Maqbara, near the main shopping centre of Hazratganj, and had a rich family background. They later lived in a company-supplied flat at Howrah. In 1948 he left India with his family and went on a three-week sea voyage to Tilbury, Essex. The family later lived in Carshalton, and Cliff attended a local primary school. After moving from India, the family faced a few struggles before they became financially settled at Hertfordshire.

His father brought him a guitar when he was 16. He also got interested in skiffle during his teens. He became lead singer of a rock and roll group, the Drifters in the late 1950s. From there on, he established as one of the top rated musical stars of 20th century. He was marketed as a rebellious rock and roll singer in Elvis Presley and Little Richard style. He dominated the British popular music scene in the pre-Beatles period of the late 1950s to early 1960s. "Move It" released in 1958 was his first hit single. His career spans over 6 decades.
