L. Vaidyanathan Biography
L. Vaidyanathan was an accomplished music director and composer of Tamil and Kannada cinema. He was a trained Carnatic vocalist too. He is very dear to every Kannadiga who loves his films. He worked under music director G.K. Venkatesh during his early years and got appreciated for his works as well. He scored background music for Kamal Hassan starrer, Pesum Padam, a silent movie, where background music played a significant role. He was one of the best music arrangers of Indian music as well. He composed songs for the popular series on Doordarshan - Malgudi Days. The haunting title track - 'Thaana na nana' was an instant hit and till nostalgic for many.
He was born to musician parents - V.Lakshminarayana and Seethalakshmi, both accomplished musicians. He was the elder brother of the renowned violin duo, L. Shankar and L. Subramaniam. All the three siblings received training in Carnatic music from their father. He started his career as an Assistant music director to G. K. Venkatesh and later moved to independent movies. Throughout his career he has composed songs for over 170 movies which include both Tamil and Kannada, predominantly Kannada language movies.
Film director Hariharan's `Ezhavathu Manithan,' which introduced actor Raghuvaran was one of his best works. Dasaratham and Marupakkam are his other notable works in Tamil while Aparichita and Ondu Mutthina Kathe are his most popular Kannada songs. In association with C.Ashwath, he has composed songs for a few Kannada movies under the name - Ashwath-Vaidi. He was equally verse as a music arranger known for using rare and unknown music instruments. Tamil Nadu Government recognised his contributions to music industry by presenting him the Kalaimamani Award — in 2003.
