M. K. Stalin Biography
Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin known as M. K. Stalin, is an Indian politician from Tamil Nadu and working president of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) political party. He was 37th Mayor of Chennai from 1996 to 2002 and 1st Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu from 2009 to 2011. MK Stalin is the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu assuming office on 7 May 2021.
He was born on 1st March 1953 and his parents are M. Karunanidhi and Dayalu Ammal. He got his degree in political science from Nandanam Arts College, Chennai. He served as the Minister of Rural Development and Local Administration in the Government of Tamil Nadu after 2006 assembly elections. Governor Surjit Singh Barnala appointed him as the Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on 29th May 2009.
His political career started when he was just 14 years old. He became a member of the General committee of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in 1973. In 1980s he acted in few Tamil movies and in mid nineties he took part in some television serials. He was arrested under MISA for opposing Emergency. Since 1989, he contested in Thousand Lights constituency in Chennai and was elected as the member of the legislative assembly of Tamil Nadu four times.
He was reelected as Mayor in 2001 but he was forbidden from holding two elected posts in the government by the then Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha. He had been arrested several times for various public issues. He was arrested along with M. Karunanidhi, Maran and others in Karunanidhi midnight arrest for alleged flyover scam. He played an important role in the victory of DMK party in 2009 general election.
The political observers and senior members of DMK criticize Karunanidhi for promoting political dynasty by bringing in his son M. K. Stalin in the similar lines of Nehru family. But DMK sources deny this fact and claim that Stalin has come up on his own merit.
He served as MLA in 1989 and 1996 assembly when his father Karunanidhi was the chief minister. Only during his fourth term as MLA, he was made a Minister in the cabinet. He also won in 2011 and 2016 elections when his party lost to the AIADMK.
