Ameerjan Biography
Ameerjan was a noted film director associated with Tamil cinema. He made his debut with 1984 Murali starrer Poovilangu and since then he has directed more than 20 Tamil films. He gave Murali the first break through his debut film. He has frequently worked with Murali and Karthik throughout 1980s and early 1990s. He received his major successes in the 1990s. He worked as an assistant director of director K. Balachander before marking his debut as a director. He passed away on 17 March 2015 in Chennai. Apart from Tamil, he also worked in a few Telugu films.
Ameerjan hailed from Salem, Tamil Nadu. He was born in 1942. He started his association with film industry in the late 1970s. He started off as an assistant director, and assisted K. Balachander for a few movies. He made his film in the year 1984. Poovilangu with debutants Murali and Kuyili playing the lead role was a box office hit. The movie also starred Poovilangu Mohan, Charle and Radha Ravi in supporting roles. The film was co-produced by his mentor K. Balachander. Since then he has directed many low budget movies with Murali and Karthik, mostly based on rural themes.
Frequently associated with Karthik and Murali for several films, he directed Rajinikanth starrer Siva (1989) which was a major hit. It was a big budget film. Apart from commercial movies he has also worked on social themes. Thulasi (1987) starring Murali and Seetha highlighted caste discrimination and inter caste marriage themes. In the 1990s he directed a few television serials too. He served as the secretary of the Directors' Association of Tamil filmmakers in 2006. He passed away in 2015. He was survived by his son and daughter.
