Anjuli Shukla Biography
Anjuli Shukla is a National award winning Indian cinematographer. She won the National award for best cinematography in the year 2010 for the highly acclaimed Malayalam movie - Kutty Srank. It was her debut film too. In fact, she is the first Indian woman cameraperson to have won the National Film Award (Silver Lotus) in this category! She is one among the rare female cinematographers of Indian film industry whose works have been recognized. She holds a diploma from FTII Pune and has also worked as an assistant to famous cinematographer cum film director, Santosh Sivan before making her debut as an independent camera woman.
She belongs to Lucknow and was born in a non-filmy family. He father is an engineer and mother, a homemaker. Yet movies have been her passion since childhood days. For the same reason after completing graduation from Christ Church College, Lucknow, she joined the prestigious Film Institute, Pune to pursue a career in film world. She chose ‘Direction’ for her studies at FTII, but was re-oriented to motion picture photography once she identified it to be her field. Then she joined Santosh Sivan as an assistant and has assisted him in a few Indian movies and 2 Hollywood projects. She was the second unit camerawoman for Mani Ratnam's Ravan.
She got the big break as an independent cinematographer through Malayalam film director, Shaji N. Karun. Kutti shrank won numerous awards including National award Best Feature Film, Screenplay, Costume design and Cinematography. Actually the film director wanted a female camera woman to add that feminine perspective to the theme that revolves around three women. She joined with Santosh Sivan for Malayalam historic movie – Urumi too.
