Anurag Singh (documentary Filmmaker) Biography

Anurag Singh is an Indian Documentary Filmmaker. Most of his documentaries are related to social themes and human rights. He made many documentaries in the 1990s, and some of them are based on social issues like Narmada Bachao Andolan, National Campaign for People's Right to Information, Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan etc. He made his first documentary, "Manibeli" in 1992, followed by "Battle for Peace" in 1992, "Kaise Jeebo Re! (How Do I Survive, My Friend)" in 1997, "Main Nai Manga" (1999), 3.5 minutes (1999), "Right to Information" (2000) etc. Currently he is not active in the same field. He is the son of noted poet and activist, Shyam Bahadur Namra who stood for tribal rights and education.

 

Anurag Singh hails from the holy city of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, and he was born in 1968. His ancestral roots are from Madhya Pradesh, in a tribal village. His father’s social work deeply influenced Anurag’s mind too, and he later made many documentaries on social themes, to create awareness among people. Initially he was a photographer in the early 1980s, and later moved to cinematography and direction in 1984.

 

Anurag directed his first film 'Manibeli' in the late 1980s. Since then he was fully active in documentary filmmaking throughout 1990s. Many of his documentaries have been screened in international film awards and won several awards too. "Kaise Jeebo Re!” was screened at International Documentary Film Festival in Amsterdam in 1997, and won YIDFF in 1999 in Yamagata, Japan. “Right to Information" won Best Documentary film award at Transparency International, Prague, and also 2nd prize in the Best Non-Fiction award at the 2000 Mumbai International Film Festival.
